APC kills 1, injures 3 in Umuahia

A hit-and-run Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), manned by unidentified military men on Wednesday killed an aged woman, Mrs Okwuchi Mbonu, and left three other persons injured in Umuahia.

Mbonu, who hailed from Umuajiji-Ibeku in Umuahia, reportedly died on the spot at about 4.30 p.m.

Those who sustained injuries were in critical condition at the Emergency Unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, where a team of medical workers was seen battling to save their lives.

Mbonu was said to be a member of “Behold, He Comet Church’’, and she was said to be preaching with the aid of a megaphone at Isi-Gate at the Umuahia Main Market, when the accident occurred.

Mbonu’s son, Chinedum, who was seen weeping profusely at the hospital, expressed shock over the death of his mother.

He explained that he saw her last in the morning when she was preparing for evangelism, adding that ‘’somebody called me on phone this evening that my mother is dead’’.

When reporters visited the hospital, arrangements were being made to move the remains of the deceased to the morgue after she was certified dead by a consultant on duty.

Eye-witness accounts said that the APC was moving on top speed on the Umuwaya Road in Umuahia when it suddenly hit a tricycle, popularly called ‘keke’ at the ever-busy Isi-Gate.

It was further learnt that the APC hit the victims and a commuter bus which was loading passengers at No. 1 Ohafia Road, before it stopped abruptly.

The accounts further stated that when the incident happened, one of the occupants of the APC jumped down with his gun while the APC reversed, it took off immediately with the armed soldier.

The witnesses decried the attitude of the driver and the other occupants of the vehicle, describing it as insensitive.

‘’They have no conscience and showed no sympathy, the APC sped off after the incident, leaving the victims unattended to,’’they said.

It was learnt that the victims were taken to the hospital by ‘’good Samaritans’’.

The Acting Spokesman of the Abia State Police Command, Mr Jonathan Amaechi, could not be reached for comments on the accident.

However, a Senior Police Officer at the Umuahia Central Police Station confirmed the incident on condition of anonymity.

The officer expressed concern over the incident, attributing it to recklessness on the part of the driver of the APC. (NAN)

  1. I think what you said was very reasonable.

However, think on this, what if you were to write a killer
headline? I ain't suggesting your content isn't good, but suppose you added something that makes
people desire more? I mean "APC kills 1, injures 3 in Umuahia" is a little plain.
You could glance at Yahoo's front page and note how they write post titles to get people to click. You might add a video or a related picture or two to grab people excited about everything've written.
In my opinion, it might make your posts a little bit more interesting.
