The present crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP took a further nose dive today as the inaugural meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) which was formed on the good books of President Goodluck Jonathan ostensibly to weaken the powers of the Governor Rotimi Amaechi led Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) witnessed a near total boycott by governors of the party.
The meeting of the PDP-GF led by Akwa Ibom state governor, Godswill Akpabio, slated for the Akwa Ibom state Governor’s Lodge in high brow Asokoro area of Abuja, which Abusidiqu.com learnt was called with the backing of Mr Jonathan and Bamanga Tukur on how to replace Rivers state governor Rotimi Amaechi as NGF chairman, began at a little past 8pm local time with only seven governors including the host.
While governors of Bayelsa, Delta, Kaduna, Cross Rivers, Kwara, Gombe and Akwa Ibom states were in attendance alongside the acting governor of Taraba, 16 of the other PDP governors boycotted the meeting. while Governors Amaechi, Sullivan Chime (Enugu), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Saidu Dakingari (Kebbi), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and Musa Kwakwanso (Kano) stayed completely away from the meeting, eight of the sixteen governors were represented by their deputies, a signal that the PDP’s umbrella is already in tatters.
The Forum’s meeting had been scheduled to agree on a consensus candidate that will take over the leadership of the wider Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF.
There are already speculations that majority of the governors elected on the platform of the party almost on their way out to the emerging opposition mega political party, All Progressives Congress, APC.
The development was said to have thrown Akpabio into serious panicking. A source close to the embarrassed Akwa Ibom governor confirmed that Akpabio will visit the presidential villa to report the development to President Jonathan.
