Nasarawa Govt. Promises To Strenghten Traditional Institutions


Gov. Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa on Friday said he would pursue appropriate policies that would strengthen traditional institutions in the state.

Al-Makura said this when he declared open the meeting of the state Traditional Council of Chiefs in Lafia.

He said that the traditional institutions had tremendous relevance in the scheme of things.

The governor lauded the role of the traditional institutions in fostering unity among various communities across the state.

He assured them that government would streamline and strengthen their functions.

Al-Makura urged them to find meaningful ways and means of contributing their quota to ensure peaceful co-existence among their subjects and other ethnic groups in their communities.

"Peace is a veritable tool to national development, it is our responsibility to see that our people, irrespective of their religious, political and ethnic differences, live peacefully.''

He said the meeting would strengthen the relationship between the government and the traditional class in the state.

"We will not hesitate to consider our traditional rulers as partners in the development of our state," he said.

Al-Makura commended them for the role they played in the promotion of well-being of the people.

The governor affirmed government's appreciation to them on the way they handled the communal clashes that engulfed some part of the state early this year, describing them as natural leaders.

Earlier, the Emir of Lafia, Alhaji Isah Mustafa-Agwai 1, appreciated the cordial relationship that existed between the state government and the traditional rulers in the state.

The emir, who is also the Chairman, Council of Chiefs in the state, said that the meeting was aimed at sensitising them to ensure lasting peace in their domains.(NAN)
